Will Kindness Make a Comeback? Lessons From Ted Lasso
With World Cup in full swing, Susanne and I are watching a few matches, but even more so are anxiously awaiting Season 3 of Ted Lasso (Still no word on the release date👎🏻). Apple’s hit show has been the topic of many conversations.
In looking back at Season 2, the tagline stood out to me.
It read “kindness makes a comeback”.
A great tagline, and yet….
We live in an age of some of the most visceral, angry, unkind, dialogue that I have ever seen.
Many hide behind computers ripping others apart in the most mean-spirited way over whatever feels right at the moment with no consideration for another’s perspective.
There are short fuses - just yesterday I had a lady behind me in the parking garage honking and screaming at me because she believed I was taking too long.
Research shows that anxiety, anger, and stress are at an all-time high. And even during the holiday season, it shows.
...enter Ted Lasso.
The “magic” behind him is that his character is just a normal guy.
He is you and me; not a superhero.
Lasso is imperfect, vulnerable, accepting others for exactly who they are, and doesn’t seem concerned about what others think about him.
He simply shows kindness, no matter the situation, and without expecting anything in return.
He apologizes without excuse and forgives easily.
We laud and love him for that and at the same time get combative when someone disagrees with us or dares tread on our opinions.
So ask yourself “What is it about Ted that I like so much? ”
Ted shows me that one can embody the “Fruits of the Spirit” and still get it wrong sometimes, which makes me human; just like Ted.
Maybe he just mirrors things in us that we desire to be better at.
If so, then be better...do better.
On the journey with you,
Carlos
