Our Most Precious Resource
I saw a phrase on the back of a shirt the other day that read, "It’s not about having time, it’s about making time."
I liked the phrase so much that I approached the man wearing it and asked if I could take a picture. Thankfully he was receptive despite the awkward request.
I was reminded again of this concept by a friend of ours. She had called my wife just to say hello. Her initial thought before she called was that she only had ten minutes so she would call another time. But, then she changed her perspective.
It was because she had ten minutes that she made the call.
Time, it is often said, is one of our most precious resources, yet it seems we do not make the most of it, despite the fact that there is no way to manufacture it or make up for time that is lost.
One of the things I have all of my coaching clients do is make a list of their values. Once that list is made we look at where they are spending their time.
I believe that we invest our time in those things that are most important to us.
If you are not spending your time investing in those things you say you value, it is time to question if those truly are your values or just words on a paper?
The reality is, you have the same amount of time as anyone else, the real question is what are you doing with it?
Are you spending it on those things that are the most rewarding and fulfilling?
As you head into the weekend, my challenge is to do the exercise I described above.
List out those things you say you value and honestly compare to the time spent on those things. If you want extra credit, ask those closest to you to get their insight. You may not like the answers, but it will give you a realistic picture and a place to start making changes.
It’s "time" to shed the excuse that you simply do not have enough of it and begin being a better steward of it.
Let me know how it goes for you and if you need help through the process, just ask.
